Q&A with Camper Lorenzo Lozano

lorenzoQ & A with Lorenzo Lozano

This is an interview with Lorenzo Lozano from San Antonio, Texas.  He has participated in MMA’s Summer Camp program five years in a row.

This is your fifth year at MMA Summer Camp. No other camper has returned as many times as you. Why do you keep coming back?

I really like it here. I learn something every year.

Do you plan to return next year?

Yes. I plan to come back two more times. After that, I’m no longer eligible.

You were 12 years old the first time you attended camp. What was it like?

The first couple of weeks were so hard for me. It was so much IPT (incentive physical training). I didn’t have discipline. I couldn’t march… Then I adjusted. Now it’s just another day. Now I help train them (the other summer campers).

What made you decide to return the following year?

I wanted to come back because I wanted to get out of the old me. I wanted a better me. I wanted to better myself.

How did the camp help you better yourself?

When I first started elementary school, I was in special-needs classes. I was later put in regular classes, but I had problems keeping up with the other kids in class.

I started to do a little better in school after my first summer camp. Do the best that you can do. Be the best that you can be. I took that with me.

It took about two summer camps to get my mind straight. This place taught me how to focus better. It helped me to get more organized and prepared. Now I’m ahead of others in my class.

What are your favorite camp activities?

I like the obstacle course, confidence course and circuit course — the stuff that gets me in shape for football.

What is the best part about MMA Summer Camp for you?

It’s the friends that you make. You make friends from all over the world. It’s so interesting to hear what they have to say about the other side of the world. I really like that experience.
