MMA Summer and ESL Camp Iron Man Competition 2009 got underway at 0900 sharp on Sunday, August 2nd with the first competitors sprinting off the starting line at Bowman Stadium track. Each sprints the initial run 1 3/4 around the stadium track, through the stadium gate, proceeds through the stadium parking lot on down Iwo Jima Boulevard, towards the Administration building, turning right to tag the next partner. The tagged partner then proceeds to the starting point for the low crawl, picks up a rubber M-16, then low-crawls to the finish line, dropping the M-16. Then, it’s across the to tag the hand of the next runner who takes off ‘round the old Boxing Gym. Tagged and released, the teammate executes 20 push-ups, picks up his ‘wounded camper’ and carries him over the 50-yard course. There, the wounded camper is deposited on the grass and the teammate proceeds to the road leading to the rifle range tagging the rifle range runner. The rifle wrangler proceeds to the indoor rifle range where he takes the prone position, firing five rounds at the target. When firing is completed to the satisfaction of Sgt Elizondo standing by, the ‘Wrangler’ proceeds out the door, along the road to the far side of the Junior Varsity Gym to tag the next runner who takes off to the Back 40 for O’Course and Confidence Course competition, tagging off to the next runner. This runner proceeds to the Paint Ball Course, grabs a paint ball gun and protective mask, then releases his gun’s paint load in the precise direction of the target’s bullseye. Then, it’s back to the Paintball starting point, dropping all paint ball gear and sprint off to tag the waiting teammate’s hand. This runner runs past the JV gym, all the way to the Mud Course area where he tags his teammate. This teammate runs preselected obstacles on the Course. Then – some with two mud-filled boots, others with less - it’s off toward the swimming pool to tag the hand of the waiting teammate. The teammate jumps (no diving allowed!) into the clear blue, swimming the length of the pool twice, exits rapidly past the pool gate to tag the hand of the waiting final runner. This runner speeds along the path behind King gym and enters the stadium drawing shouts of encouragement from his waiting company. Pumping his arms fast-forward he takes off ‘round the track for a final lap, then puts everything he’s got left in to the final sprint across the finish line. The entire camp completes the event – FOX Company (ESL) in record time - just in time for hearty CONGRATULATIONS and ‘thumbs up’ from Commandant SgtMaj Kinsley followed by a cool shower, pizza and a few inspirational words from Chaplain Elliott. OORAH!
